The rivalry between Blair and Plattsmouth has evolved into an anticipated season opener, garnering much attention from both school’s followers. Coach Larsen of Plattsmouth sheds light on the dynamism of this annual clash, “It really starts with having experience. In 2020 and 2021, Plattsmouth had two heavy senior classes which helps things on a Friday night,” he states, emphasizing the significance of seasoned players in past games.
Recalling past matches, Coach Larsen speaks of a consistent effort to keep this matchup alive, “Regardless, Coach Soukup, Coach Dzuris, and now myself have always made it a point to try and play each other. Since I’ve been an assistant and now head coach it’s typically a Blair/Plattsmouth match up Week 1.” Noting an exception, he mentions, “Despite having to play a Week 0 game this year for Blair,” but firmly believes that “both programs have embraced this game, and it has become a small little tradition.”
Addressing the significant score gap in the 2022 game, Larsen recalls, “Blair had a lot of speed, and they still have lots of speed in their skilled positions. That really took the game over early last year, and our team was trying to play catch up.” But with confidence, he adds, “Having our 9 returners back, the experience factor is important while preparing for this upcoming game.” He, however, stresses the necessity for the players “to perform at a high level and be able to execute.”
Defense has always been a cornerstone for Plattsmouth. As Larsen puts it, “Our players take a lot of pride in being tough and physical. We have to be fundamentally sound and execute.” Offering a glimpse into his roster, he proudly shares some of the key players to watch, ranging from Gabe Villamonte as QB to the All-State TJ Fitzpatrick in defense.
As Friday approaches, Plattsmouth seems primed for action, aiming to utilize their experienced lineup and the wisdom of Coach Larsen. Fans will certainly be in for a treat as these teams face off yet again, writing another chapter in their evolving sports story.
Plattsmouth plays Blair next at 7PM, Friday, 25 August, at Plattsmouth Football Field, Plattsmouth, Nebraska.
