After the triumphant return of St. John the Baptist School’s Oktoberfest in 2023, Plattsmouth residents are eagerly anticipating an even more exciting celebration for 2024. Set to take place on Saturday, October 5th, starting at 5 pm, this year’s event promises to build upon last year’s success with new attractions, expanded offerings, and the same welcoming community spirit that made the 2023 revival so memorable.
A Tradition Reborn and Growing
Last year marked the revival of the school’s Fall Festival tradition, which had been paused due to the challenges of the pandemic. Cortney MacTaggart, who continues to play a key role in organizing the event, reflected on the journey: “We were thrilled to bring back this cherished tradition in 2023, and the community’s response was overwhelming. This year, we’re taking everything that worked well and adding even more excitement.”
New Attractions for 2024
Building on the foundation laid in 2023, this year’s Oktoberfest introduces several new attractions. “We’re excited to offer VIP packages and presale tickets for the first time,” MacTaggart announced. These options include perks such as a limited edition Oktoberfest beer stein and access to a special line for quicker entry.
New games for 2024 include a milk jug toss, chicken-in-a-pot, penny toss, mechanical pig races, and a hammer strike game. A standout addition is the giant pumpkin bounce house, sure to be a hit with younger attendees. Animal lovers will appreciate the presence of Happy Paws Animal Rescue, who will be on-site with adoptable dogs.
Returning Favorites
Many popular elements from last year’s event are making a welcome return. The Old Krusty Minstrels, who were a hit in 2023, will once again provide live music, offering their unique mix of Oktoberfest songs, crowd favorites, and classics.
The biergarten, a highlight of last year’s festival, is back with an expanded selection. “Last year’s biergarten was a huge success,” MacTaggart said. “This year, we’re not only bringing back the popular spiked hot apple cider but also introducing a new cocktail featuring raspberries, schnapps, and wheat beer.”
Food and Beverage Expansion
While last year’s event featured food trucks and local specialties like Union Orchard apple cider donuts, 2024 sees an even more diverse array of culinary options. Returning favorites like La CabaƱita Taco Truck will be joined by newcomers such as Beyond BBQ, offering brisket sandwiches and pulled pork. The Knights of Columbus will serve traditional brats and sauerkraut, maintaining the Oktoberfest theme.
In addition to the expanded biergarten offerings, this year introduces Glacial Till Craft Cider and Brickway Brewery Oktoberfest Beer, showcasing more local flavors.
Community Support and Impact
The strong community support evident in 2023 has only grown for 2024. “Last year, we were incredibly blessed with sponsorships from many local Plattsmouth businesses and Omaha-based sponsors,” MacTaggart noted. “This year, that support has expanded even further.”
The silent auction, a highlight of the 2023 event, returns with over 30 items, including unique offerings like a handmade dog kennel and custom cornhole boards, alongside returning favorites such as tickets to local attractions.
As in 2023, all proceeds from the event will directly benefit St. John the Baptist’s Home and School Association. This year’s special project focuses on funding new security lights for the school building, continuing the tradition of using the festival to support specific school needs.
Looking Ahead
With its blend of traditional Oktoberfest charm and fresh, family-friendly attractions, St. John the Baptist School’s Oktoberfest 2024 is poised to surpass the success of last year’s revival. MacTaggart summed up the sentiment: “Last year showed us how much our community values this tradition. In 2024, we’re aiming to create an even more memorable experience for everyone in Plattsmouth and beyond.”
As the event grows, it continues to embody the welcoming spirit of Plattsmouth. Whether you’re a returning guest from last year or a first-time attendee, the 2024 Oktoberfest at St. John the Baptist School promises to be a celebration of community, tradition, and autumn fun that shouldn’t be missed.
